Special effects in cinema: the art of illusion

The moon's black eye, the gorilla perched atop the Empire State Building, the tyrannosaurus nose-to-nose with the research team, Sauron's armies battling the last humans... These scenes may be part of your pantheon of pantheon. They wouldn't exist without special effects, which are as old as cinema itself.

This MOOC takes you to the other side of the curtain, to understand how these worlds, these creatures, these breathtaking scenes are created.

To do this, we mobilized three types of resources:

  • Online resources to give you a basic understanding of a few key techniques.

  • Videos featuring special effects specialists, both famous and new, talking about the challenges they face and the techniques they use.

  • Trailers for the films featured in the videos, so you can take your place as a spectator, forget the technicalities and let yourself be carried away by the stories.

You'll have the opportunity to share your best memories of creatures, environments and spectacular scenes with other participants. Together, you'll create a famous film library!

If you're a regular in cultural MOOCs, you know you can earn badges and a certificate here. With the Special Effects in Film MOOC, we're taking it a step further: as you work your way through the pages, you'll be able to collect points, take on challenges and try to win prizes. challenges and try to win prizes!

The MOOC is brought to you by the Centre des Arts d'Enghien-les-Bains, with the support of the Orange Foundation.

# The program

Introduction - The invention of special effects in cinema

Like cinema itself, special effects were born in France! Do you know the name of the magician-turned-filmmaker who created Moon Trip?

1

Writing special effects

Special effects are at the service of the director's imagination. Over the years, previsualization techniques, which allow us to visualize scenes before or during filming, have evolved considerably.

2

Landscapes and environments

Special effects are used both to recreate real environments and to create new ones from scratch. The aim is always the same: to make you believe!

3

Creatures and characters

Superheroes, extraterrestrial creatures, historical figures, humanized animals... Special effects designers compete in ingenuity to create ever more realistic characters, including in the expression of their emotions.
